That’s a question that came up in a coaching session yesterday.

She’s new around here and looking to grow and learn from people on LinkedIn.

Know what my response was?

“I love when people look at my profile!”

That’s right.

I don’t think of those people as lurkers.

I think of those people as potential relationships.

After all I told her, “If you put all this work into your profile then wouldn’t you want people to check you out?”

When in doubt, send that personalized message, make that observation about that person’s profile, find something that you can relate to.

I was there. Back in 2017, I was only connected to people I knew. Then I started expanding my network and I haven’t looked back.

There are 810 million people on LinkedIn. I don’t think of all those people as strangers.

My go to is “There are people here for the wrong reasons, but there are more people here for the right ones.”

Do you think these Lego guys worry about what people here on LinkedIn think of them? Nope and neither should you!

I just got off the phone with a couple of amazing people who made me smile and made my day better.

Amanda K. and Chris Hennessy 🎙📹 have HUGE hearts and they are AMAZING humans. I’m so happy to take the LinkedIn relationship with both of these people offline.

I’m proud to support Sadie’s Purpose because it’s a worthwhile cause that fills a big need in the community and you should follow Amanda K. and her non-profit’s page. I can’t wait to see all the big things she does with her organization.

Chris Hennessy 🎙📹 is going to have a HUGE 2022 because he’s found his mission and his community and I told him “If you need anything, just let me know.”

Niraj Kapur said something during LinkedIn International for Lawyers on Clubhouse this morning. He said “If you aren’t meeting people face to face, you should.” He walks the talk. He travels hours to meet people who are worthwhile of his time and it enhances relationships, it’s truly appreciated.

I can’t meet and interact with all my people here in person, it’s hard. I do all my stuff via Zoom and phone. These “get to know you phone calls on Friday afternoons” is the next best thing. This afternoon I spoke to connections who live hours away and they both made my day better.

Have conversations with people you follow and appreciate offline.

Oh and I thought of a profile tip too…so if you’ve read this post until the end…you’re in luck! Your profile is not set in stone. You can tweak it at any time.

Make the changes, test out that headline, modify that banner image, make that change to your About section, because nothing is set in stone.

DON’T copy and paste your resume summary statement to your About section.

PLEASE don’t do it.

15 years ago, I did it, I’ll admit it.

I know better now.

What should your about section be?

It should begin with a “hook” to get people’s attention and then tell your story.

Use the space to tell it. Start with the professional stuff first and end with the personal side.

Picture this, you are sitting in front of someone and he or she says “sell yourself” and asks you “What makes you unique?”

Thats the type of stuff you should put in your About.

Oh and if you don’t put all the contact info in at the end, you’re missing out on an opportunity because after all that selling, it would be a missed opportunity if you didn’t give people a good way to contact you.

For the next few days, I’m going to give you one quick thing you can do to take your LinkedIn profile from drab to dynamic!

First, let’s talk about the education part of your profile. If you are listing your high school in your education section and you aren’t still in high school, yeah you can remove that.

I’ve seen people listing their high school education from 20 or 30 years ago, no need.

BONUS! Want another one??? Take out the years from your education section. Did you know that it’s totally optional to list when you graduated? Yep it is.

People can figure out your age using the education section, there’s no need to publicize when you graduated.

There’s your 2 for 1.

What have you done recently to take your LinkedIn profile from drab to dynamic?

If you LOVE someone’s content on LinkedIn and want to see more of it….do this. Go to that person’s LinkedIn profile and “ring” their bell. AKA, click on that person’s bell (THIS IS A NEW FEATURE, it’s on the upper right of that person’s profile) and you’ve “bookmarked” it.

That way you can see your favorite people in your feed.

BOOM! I’m going to find the 70s disco song to make this post complete, it’s going in the comments.

I ask that question (metaphorical but still a good one) on calls with prospects, calls with clients, or even when I’m just talking about LinkedIn.

An optimized profile – picture, headline, banner, about, etc. etc. etc. – should be PART of the equation to reach your goals here on this platform but not ALL of it.

In your opinion, what is the most important thing when it comes to being successful here?

Is there one thing that’s worked for you or is it a solid combination?

That’s how many versions of my banner image I did until I was happy with it.

Even those of us who work with our clients can learn a lesson here.

I knew it was time for a change. I knew that I wanted to capture my Purple Squirrel Magnet and my logo.

I also wanted to capture my “I’ll take you from scroll to strategy” phrase.

I used Canva. I strongly recommend using this FREE website for your banner.

I asked my friend John Espirian for his take on it. He gave me his expert opinion and sent me a video to explain his thoughts behind it. I worked on it yesterday, I still wasn’t sure, so today I asked John for his opinion.

Then I worked on it more. I looked at it on the desktop, I looked at it on the mobile, I fixed it and I modified it until I was happy.

Tweaking it here, tweaking it there…

It’s clean, it’s not busy, it says exactly what I want it to. I can see my logo and my squirrel in every version. Now you know what I do and it fits my “brand” too.

When you’re working on a project, how many takes does it take you to get to the finished product where you can say “OK, good to go!”?

I get that question a lot, got it today actually. There aren’t too many “Purple Squirrel Magnets” on LinkedIn. So that’s one thing. I also have a triangle strategy that’s unique.

If someone calls himself or herself a LinkedIn trainer or coach, that doesn’t mean that he or she does the exact same thing I do.

Let me give you an example. I came across someone who uses “LinkedIn Trainer” in the headline/tag line. That person has less than 1,000 followers and only posts once a month.

I might be able to understand the posting once a month if I saw that person commenting consistently.

I teach my clients is to be consistent. Posting once a month is NOT consistent.

Just liking posts instead of commenting to add to the conversation is NOT enough either.

Before you choose someone to work with here on LinkedIn, do your homework.

If you want to build a presence on this platform, you have to walk the walk and talk the talk.

What expertise do you look for when you’re hiring someone?

Why?

I want my authenticity to speak for itself.

It’s one thing to call yourself authentic, it’s another to let your true colors show so other people refer to you as authentic.

There are some people who are one way online and another in person.

You won’t get that with me. I am the same person online as I am offline.

Mom who runs her own biz? Yep that’s me.

Someone who genuinely cares about her clients and friends here. Yeah, I can check that box.

Stressed out mom? Yep, I fit that one sometimes. Especially when there’s fighting between brother and sister and tears getting on the bus. Anyone else dealing with kids who fight daily?

What you see here is what you get.

Sometimes it’s just a matter of letting your actions speak louder than your words.

There is a difference between the two.

Please don’t copy and paste your resume here.

I was looking at a few About sections over the past couple days. I made some observations and wanted to give some tips that will help others who are wondering…

“What’s my About section all About?”

Your About section shouldn’t have your skills in a long list.

Your About section shouldn’t be paragraphs of keywords.

Your About section SHOULD tell your story, tell your why, tell people what your differentiator is.

After all, the place you should be selling yourself here is in your LinkedIn profile.

If you got something out of this tip, fantastic! I’ll have LinkedIn tips like this and more in my weekly email blast. I’d love to get up to 50 subscribers! The link to sign up is in the comments.
